October Morn - Weekly Seasonal Thoughts

It creeps in during the night like a cat on the prowl and covers the world like a moth eaten blanket of clouds.

As we wake to the misty aura there is an eerie silence that sends a chill then brings a calm and peaceful shelter from the surrounding hustle and bustle of the outer regions. It is timeless, and we want to remain lost there.

A hot cup of morning brew smells, feels, and tastes more robust, warm, and delicious as we allow the serenity of the moment to settle into our skeletal being. We know it is only imagination that we have somehow exited all existance as we knew it, but we savor the thought as long as possible.

Time returns as it creeps back out quiescently as it came. We reluctantly return into the reality of life and the human condition leaving the shelter and peace. Day has awaken within us.

October Moon - Weekly Seasonal Thoughts

October 14, 2008

The October moon over the upper St. Joe River in Elkhart Indiana paints the perfect scene for the season.
As evening traffic flows by, the cool air and soft breeze tell of the time too soon to come when winter's chill brings the frozen surface to the river.
The sound of ducks, geese, gulls, and swans lurking on the dark waters hold promise that there is still time to enjoy nature's fall fantasia before the world glistens white with winter's wonder.
Sometime soon the streets will ring with the bustle of young goblins, wizards, monsters, princesses, and witches seeking rewards for their creative efforts.
It's truly a magical time!

Review Post Assignment

Elkhart Truth article Moore Takes Issue With New York Times Article

I chose this article for review because it is one of my greatest frustrations that the press way too frequently misinforms either by only reporting partial information or just simply reporting for the sensational effect that will sell papers.

I read the Times article the Mayor of Elkhart is refuting in the Truth article and my first reaction was "there have always been restriction for garage sales in Elkhart". And I don't recall that I bothered to read the entire article. I have reached a point where I will not waste time paying credance to known ineptness.

Content wise the Truth article begins as it should for this topic by stating the facts as presented by City officials. Continuing to give the background of the related Times article is helpful for those who did not see it to know what this article is about, but also assists those who did in having an understanding of how such shabby reporting came about.

The Truth webpage layout for the article begins with too much white space between the headline and the body of the article. The spacing between the paragraphs appear to be 1 1/2 lines instead of 1 line. This is not visually appealing and takes up more space than there needs to be. The alignment for the text is good. The border is effective enough. The colors of some of the elements around the article do make them stand out. However I have alway felt the eTruth page format is somewhat "messy" and confusing. I also do not like the ad and rating block inside the article text area. The ad blocks along in the right hand column of the page are asethically well placed and aligned and break up the other elements effectively.

Picture of the Week

Take a Walk on the Wild Side

One of my favorite places to walk when I do not have unlimited time is Woodlawn Nature Center. With ten acres of wooded trails WNC is a great place to get away from the hustle and buslte of the daily rat race. You can walk or jog, free of the hazaards of traffic, in the sanctuary of the oak canopy while breathing in the oxygen rich air of the forest.

Seasonal wonders from Jack-in-the-Pulpits and Mayapples to a vast variety of colorful fungus will be there for your viewing pleasure. Leave your IPOD off and listen to the music of the forest. Cardnials, Veeries, and Thrushes will serenade you as squirrels scamper about.

The Nature Center also features picnic areas and a natural history museum that is open 3 -4 afternoons weekly.

Woodlawn Nature Center is located at 604 Woodlawn Avenue in Elkhart, Indiana. You can visit their website at http://www.woodlawnnaturecenter.com/ . Take a walk on the wildside at this true haven within the city.
